6th GRADE RLA SYLLABUS

COURSE DESCRIPTION

Students will develop comprehension and written/verbal communication skills via the application of the Tennessee Ready State Standards. Reading/Language Arts students will explore the study of reading, writing, grammar, speaking, and listening through hands-on exploration, interactive engagement, inquiry, increased integration of technology, and the reading of a variety of literary texts.

TOPICS COVERED

Reading Strategies, Non-Fiction and fiction Literature, Reading Process Skills, Parts of Speech, Literary Terms, Poetry, Writing Process, Mechanics of Writing, Journal Writing, Conventions, Various Forms of Writing (persuasive, argumentative, narrative, etc.), Effective Sentence Development, Vocabulary Development, Root Word Study, Effective Communication Skills (i.e. Listening, Speaking, Viewing), and Technology Integration

ASSIGNMENTS AND PROJECTS

Students will be expected to complete routine weekly in class and homework assignments.  There will be at least one project assigned during the course of each nine weeks. These projects will require some at home assistance and will include some outside resources such as posters, magazines, newspapers, craft supplies, library time, etc. Outside reading assignments will be assigned on a regular basis throughout each nine weeks.

GRADING

Classwork and homework:  20%, Quizzes:  20%, Projects 30%, Summative Assessments 30%
